Obituary of Teresa Petrus
October 2, 1935 – Dragalic, Croatia
May 22, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Baka Teresa Petrus. She passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at the graceful age of 86 years. Although Dida Vlado is welcoming her with open arms!
Teresa was born in Dragalic, Croatia on October 2, 1935 to Josip and Marija Moravcek. She attended grade school with great success, worked from an early age and met and married Vlado, the love of her life. Like many Croatians, they immigrated to Canada with their young son Zeljko in 1969 to look for a better life. They were welcomed by Vlado’s brother Joe and an already vibrant community of Croatians in Calgary.
Baka loved gardening and needle point, but her real passion was cooking for family and friends. Homemade chicken noodle soup, stuffed peppers, sarma, strudel, and pig on the spit accompanied by her special potato and cabbage salads were the staple of the Petrus’s household. Baka worked numerous jobs, helped in the family real estate business and passionately cared for her granddaughters. She was a supportive member of the Croatian Canadian Cultural Club, the suma, and the Croatian Catholic Church (Our Lady of Marija Bistrica). Baka and Dida spent their winters in Hawaii and took regular trips to Croatia, often accompanied by their granddaughters Olivia and Tessa. Dida Vlado passed away five years ago after 62 years of marriage.
Teresa is survived by her son Gerry (Zeljko) and his wife Sandee, and their daughters Olivia and Tessa. Teresa was loved and will be missed by her brother Slavko and his wife Ivanka with Barbara and Nancy and their families; her sisters Zdenka and Milka in Croatia, along with their children and grandchildren. Teresa was predeceased by her brother Ivan and his wife in Croatia. Baka was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Her family is very thankful for the care she received at Father Lacombe Care Centre as well as the Cancer Centre
Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Marija Bistrica Croatian Catholic Church (14680 Deer Ridge Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
