Francesco LoGullo

Obituary of Francesco LoGullo

February 18, 1929 - May 23, 2022

With heavy hearts and great sadness, we announce the passing of Francesco LoGullo; Papa, Nannu, Zio and friend. He passed away Monday, May 23, 2022, at the age of 93 years surrounded in love with his children and grandchildren.

Francesco was born in Sartano, Cosenza, Italia on February 18, 1929, the youngest of six children to Emilio LoGullo and Carolina DeRose. At a young age, World War II broke out and his four older brothers were drafted into the army, leaving Francesco the lone son at home with his parents and older sister Gina. Only three brothers returned from the war, a loss that Francesco never recovered from. At the age of 22, Francesco served in the Italian military and returned home in 1953. Shortly afterwards, he immigrated to Canada and arrived in Calgary, AB on Christmas Day in 1955 to reunite with his sister Gina and brother Gennaro who had come to Canada before him. He secured work in a lumber yard in Hinton, AB. In November 1959, he returned to Italy where he was introduced to Amalia Dodaro, whom he married in January 1960. They left Italy for their life together in Calgary, AB in May that year, and shared three children and four grandchildren over their 60 years of marriage until Amalia’s passing in 2020. Francesco worked for ATCO Structures for 23 years and for his nephew Franco at Lo Gullo Industries Ltd. for 7 years before his retirement in 1990. He spent his summers in his garden and autumns were spent making wine and helping Amalia can tomatoes.

In 1993 Amelia Rose, the first of his grandchildren arrived and Amalia and Francesco’s daycare service officially opened. Sofia Victoria, Francesca Carolina, and Vincenzo Raffaele arrived over the next several years and this kept Francesco busy walking his grandchildren back and forth to school each day. After school was spent snacking with the kids, cutting up and sharing apples and pears before the kids went home for the day, but not before he would share a glass of wine with Michelle.

Even though he would protest at the beginning, Francesco always enjoyed a great family trip. We were blessed to visit Italy with Nannu and Nana in 2010 and see where he grew up. We saw the spot he was when notice of World War II broke out and shared wine with some of his extended family. We were able to visit Greece, Turkey, Monaco, and Spain with him. Francesco also visited California and took several trips to the Okanagan where he picked fruit and visited wineries. Marisa and Sam took Francesco on camping trips to Montana where he enjoyed fireside BBQ’s and visiting with the Polcino family. Our last family trip was to Hawaii where we had picnics on the beach and visited Pearl Harbour and many other attractions. The last two years were a challenge for Francesco without his beloved wife Amalia. Life wasn’t the same for him, but he did find joy with his grandchildren whom he adored. Lina was devoted to caring for him throughout the week and Marisa and Ralph would care for him over the weekends. Family dinners still continued, but there was a noticeable void.

Francesco has now left this earth to join his wife and family for eternal pasta dinners and good wine. He will be deeply missed by his children, Lina LoGullo (Norm), Raffaele (Michelle) Lo Gullo, and Marisa (Saverio) Polcino; and his grandchildren, Amelia (Jared), Sofia, Francesca, and Vincenzo. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Ida Salituro of Toronto; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Calgary, Toronto and Italy. He was predeceased by his loving wife Amalia, and his siblings Bruno, Gina, Gennaro, Ernesto, and Ademo.

Our family wishes to thank the amazing care provided by Candy, Maricar, Michelle, Gilbert, Jen, and the rest of the team from Silverado Creek Seniors Community. Special gratitude is also extended to Emily, Gina, and Shawntel from Home Care Assistance.
