Obituary of Margot Howe

May 23, 1945 - Meppel, Drenthe, Holland

May 23, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Margot Howe of Calgary, AB passed away on Monday, May 23, 2022 at the age of 77 years.

Margot lived life to the fullest despite overcoming many emotional struggles and persistent physical pain. She overcame her challenges and filled her days meeting new friends and gathering people around her who nurtured and brought true joy to her. Margot was born in the Netherlands in 1945 and eventually taken to Canada by her adoptive mother. Raised in Lethbridge, she graduated from Lethbridge Collegiate.  Margot would return to Holland, as she referred to it, and completed the first year in medicine at the University of Amsterdam as she still enjoyed her Dutch citizenship. Unfortunately, her muscular dystrophy prevented her from completing. While in Holland, she connected with her birth family and had an enjoyable relationship with her two full siblings, sister Mina and late brother Cornelius.  She also found three half- and three step- siblings and their families which she was very pleased to know. This was an exceptional find as she grew up thinking she was an only child. Margot returned to Lethbridge and worked as an assistant in a medical office and at the Lethbridge Herald. She had married twice.  She met her first husband in Holland.  Then, she met William (Bill) her life love in Lethbridge. She married Bill in 1981. Though divorced in 1988, her and Bill continued to be each other’s significant other. She leaves Bill's brother behind as well, John F. Howe of Switzerland.

Following the death of her adoptive mother, Margot moved to Calgary where she was able to establish herself and build a community around her. She was a staunch supporter of animals taking charge as the Pastoral Care lead for animal deaths at Living Spirit United Church.  She herself had four fur babies (cats), Peepsi (half Persian), Tara (pure Persian), Isis (another Persian) and Ruby (pure Himalayan). She supported the Calgary Humane Society. She participated in the Apeiron Society, was a member of William Watson Lodge Society, supported the David Suzuki Foundation and attended the singles ministry at Centre Street Church for well over twenty years. Margot filled her calendar and worked diligently to stay active. Margot will be remembered for her great compassion for others.

Margot met her close friend and adopted sister, Anett Pon, at the Centre for Human Awareness and Development in the early 1990s.  Margot’s consciousness led her to hold strong Christian beliefs. She cherished each of her church families including Living Spirit and South Minister of Calgary and McKillop United Church in Lethbridge. Margot was grateful to all her health care providers, and especially, for the healing achieved while a patient of the late Dr. Jean Kyte of Lethbridge.
