Uncle Barry -
When we first met I sometimes wondered ‘wow, is this true?’ – whether it was a story about how you were in the Calgary Stampede tyring to saddle wild horses or football stories which led to helmet hair and a twisted pinkie finger. As I got to know you better I began to understand that yes these are true stories (sans helmet hair) and that these stories shared some of the characteristics of Barry Rowe. Tough, gritty, humorous (ref helmet hair) are some of the clear outward characteristics that I will remember. There were also some subtler characteristics that I will cherish. How you played and joked with the younger generation in our family. How you prioritized and cared for our family and family events. How you cared for each family member by actively listening and engaging in ‘what is going on in your life?’ type of questions. And it is within this last question where you and I connected - Often it was football, golf, oil and gas, or politics and these conversations often led to broader reflections about life. I will always cherish the memories of the moments we had together and will forever miss your perspective and guidance.
Barry Rowe, you always filled the room you were in and we will always miss your presence but one thing that will never change is that we will always love you.
Love,
Kevin Flynn
Uncle Barry
Fun loving and always up for a laugh, whether in the car with the license plate signs to flash at other vehicles or cracking jokes that if I'm honest, I didn't always get but laughed anyways because well it was Barry.
Prankster extraordinaire, especially to newcomers to the family with the famous pinky finger.
Encouraging, particularly when I thought I had a good Betty Boop impression, not sure it was actually that great but you made me believe it was.
Excellent sloppy joe chef.
Best excuse for male pattern baldness ever. Whenever I see a bald man I still wonder what helmet requiring sport caused that hair loss. And to this day my favourite picture of you is the one with Alfred and your matching hair dos.
Competitive and yet always a good sport even when you lost a beach race to your adolescent niece.
Always a sportsman and a key player in the tennis-baseball game organising at the lake.
Only one I trusted to not intentionally dump me off the tube.
Always showed genuine interest in what someone was up to in life. Loved a good discussion about business with my other half.
The main reason I am still known as The Pest to this day. You certainly helped keep that nickname alive and I love it.
We will miss your smile, your laughter, your jokes and that mischievous glint in your eye but most of all we will miss your presence.
Love always,
The Pest
