Condolences
My heart hurts to discover Joan’s passing. She was my heart mom. Joan took me under her wing 36 yrs ago when I was a single mom with lots of struggles. Something she understood. I had the horse bug and it was a horse that introduced us. We spent many a time riding together and she taught me so much. I was heartbroken due to circumstances to have to move away across the country but we kept in touch with biannual long phone conversations and a few in person visits. I discovered her passing when I couldn’t reach her at Christmas.
Joan was truly a remarkable woman. Her knowledge of raising horses, ranching, cattle, nursing, the mountains, and the various flowers and vegetation that grew there was amazing. She had an eye for raising quality stock horses with unique colouring like red or blue roans and rare grullo. She also was successful raising quality sport horses some making it to Spruce Meadows. As a tiny woman she could put in fencing with a hand pounder, manage feeding 60 head of cattle, guide pack trips, tie a diamond hitch all while having a successful career working full time as a quality hospital nurse. She continued to work into her 80’s putting a million miles on her cars doing insurance medicals. Joan also did missionary work travelling abroad at times. Just for “something to do” she took flamenco dancing and was even in a performance dancing at Jack Singer Hall. Joan was not much of a housekeeper but she was a fabulous cook. She had a love of gardening and a good knowledge of nutrition and holistic healing. I once had a injury she used therapeutic touch on to aid in pain relief.
I remember I watched Joan use ropes and gentle pressure to make a 2000+ lb bull lay down and be quiet while she doctored his foot. She had so much knowledge and skill I hope she was able to pass some down to her grandchildren. My deepest condolences to her family. I know she loved you dearly.
We are so sorry to hear about Joan’s passing. We enjoyed knowing her over the past 10 years or so. Her love of country life and horses was a joy in her life and she always spoke lovingly of her family. I know that when you lose someone, one has to learn to not live without them but rather to live with the love they left behind. May that love and the memories provide comfort during this sad and difficult time. Our deepest sympathy, Bonnie and Jim Schultz, Millarville
