Obituary of Glenn William Vincent Smith

May 17, 1954 – Parry Sound, Ontario

June 19, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Glenn Smith of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2022, at the age of 68 years.

Glenn was born in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada on May 17, 1954. He lived in various places around the world:  Bahrain, Italy, South Africa, and the UK and had a wanderlust for travel. Italy, and South Africa however, held the greatest place in his heart.

Glenn graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science and earned his PHD from the University of Loughborough, UK.

Glenn accomplished much throughout his life and was particularly proud of the business he had built from the ground up, in chemical blending. The success in his business ventures allowed him the opportunity to help an enormous amount of people through his limitless generosity. He was able to live a most interesting life to the absolute fullest, while never forgetting where he came from. It was his desire to leave behind a legacy where his heirs would be safe and financially independent; and create many “magical” moments for those close to him, that could be remembered always.

His love of chemistry made him an excellent chef.  He liked nothing better than to combine flavours into unique sauces and rubs and enjoyed his time in the spice markets of Istanbul shopping for unique and special ingredients to bring home.  He had many subscriptions to cooking magazines and was always seeking out a special recipe to share with family or friends.

Glenn loved animals. His time on his game reserve in Limpopo, South Africa was a special chance for him to get away from the cares of the world and focus his attention through his camera lens on the animals and their antics around him.

He had experienced so many wonderful places and things, but Italy, Istanbul, and South Africa always called him the most.  The pandemic was hard on him to remain in Calgary for so long and it was with the utmost pleasure that he was able to finally get across to Scotland and visit with his beloved daughter, Angela, and his grandchildren. There were too many memorable vacations to list, but at the top would be time with his grandkids.

He will be most remembered for:

•      His funny mincing dance steps,

•      His fascination with putting magic moments into his life,

•      His care and concern for others,

•      The way he would turn his finger up at the world,

•      His love of music – old and new,

•      His love for his dogs, and the extravagant cuisine they were treated too through their time with him,

•      The way he lived his life, on his terms, unapologetically.

Glenn is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela Smith and Pasquale Fuoco of Largs, Scotland and Alison and Jeffrey Nash of Edmonton, Alberta; his grandchildren by Angela:  Luca, Charlie, and Maximo, and by Alison: Samuel, Ella, Theodore, and Sophia. Glenn is also survived by his three sisters and sister-in-law. Sharon (James) Cannon of San Jose, California, Sandra (Bradley) Tyler of Parry Sound, Ontario, and Coralie (Howard) Belman of Toronto, Ontario; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and friends.

He was predeceased by his brother Raymond (Lynn) Smith of Toronto, Canada and sister Maureen Smith of Devon, UK. Glenn was also predeceased by his constant and loving companions, Flora, Rory, and Tank.

His memory will be kept alive and cherished by the many people who knew and adored him.
