Obituary of Prafula Arvind Patel

April 17, 1943 – Kisumu, Nyanza, Kenya

July 1, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Prafula Arvind Patel passed away peacefully on Friday, July 1, 2022, in Calgary, Canada.  She leaves behind her adoring husband Arvind, three grateful children, Niti, Shilpa, and Sital; and four beautiful grandchildren, Anisha, Clare, Lucas, and Max.

Prafula was born in Maseno, Kenya to parents Gordhanbhai and Santaben Patel in 1943. She grew up in Kenya with her siblings Pravin, Suryakant, Narendra, Kirit, and Kailash, and after marrying Arvind in 1964, they moved to Uganda to start a life and family together. In 1972, in the midst of political turmoil, she and her young family were displaced to the United Kingdom until ultimately settling in a small city in the middle of the Canadian prairies, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  There she raised her family, as well as helping countless other immigrant families, and inviting everyone into her home to feast on her cooking, kindness, and generosity.

The family of Prafula asks that in lieu of flowers, condolences be expressed by each of you making a large, loving dinner for your loved ones, and a small donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association (https://www.diabetes.ca/)

A service to honor her spirit will be conducted at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB), on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, starting at 2:00 p.m. For those who are unable to attend the service, you are invited to join Prafula’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
