Obituary of Burton Fredrick Goods

December 27, 1942 – Maple Creek, Saskatchewan

July 1, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Burt Goods, beloved husband of Brenda Goods (nee Annesley/ Dobrescu), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2022, at the age of 79 years.

Burt was born in Maple Creek, SK, on December 27, 1942, to parents Beatrice and Fredrick Goods. Burt worked as a printer for various local Calgary printing houses before venturing out on his own as a designer - supplier for Restaurant Menus and Hotel Directories. Since 1970, Burt built the successful business Custom Craft Press LTD, later known as "Menus On The Go."

Burt was an active and proud member of the Alberta Standardbred Horse Racing Association (ASHA). Burt was the proud owner and trainer of five standardbred horses, whom he loved and spent all his spare time with. In 1998, Burt was co-owner of a prize-winning horse "Avon Lady".

It was not home unless there was a cat or dog in the house, Burt loved his animals, big or small. He loved fishing lakes and rivers in Alberta and BC. Many of his favourite trips were enjoyed with Vivian Goods and daughters, Jackie and Joanne, fishing. Every fall Burt actively travelled the high mountains in the Crow's Nest Pass and Banff area, hunting for moose and elk with Dale Sweany. Always proud to bring home his trophies and make fabulous dinners. When he was a young man, he was recognized in the Calgary Herald for having the "largest moose rack in Alberta." The stories he would tell of these adventures!

As a young boy, Burt would skip school, pick a bag of tomatoes, and venture off to fish, cooking anything he caught over an open fire. That's likely where he found his love for cooking and enjoying his fresh catch of the day. Burt’s passion for cooking oven-roasted prime rib, baking the most amazing fresh pies, stir-fries and bread were only a few to mention. He would reminisce about attending a Chinese cooking class and the skills he learned. Burt’s latest passion was running his infamous hot-dog cart in the local community. The neighbourhood loved his lunches, and he loved providing joy and cheer.

Burt loved to spend idol time singing the country oldies on karaoke, he loved his country music! He had a very nice voice but didn't make the big time. Burt did not have a favourite poem, but his favourite quotations were of a "flower" in itself.

His trip to the Northern Arctic with three close friends was a yearly adventure, for four years, which Burt was delighted to share all the tales to anyone who would listen. Burt's memory of his trip with his daughter Joanne to Nashville was a highlight which created memorable moments for father and daughter. His last memorable vacation was to Jamaica, where he married Brenda at their destination wedding in 2012.

Besides his beloved wife Brenda Goods, Burt is survived by his two daughters, Jackie Brett, and Joanne Marshall; three granddaughters, Daphne, Venessa, and Brooklyn; sister Dolores Sweany of Calgary, niece Dawn Sweany of Calgary, and nephew Duane Sweany. He is also survived by his extended family and their spouses, Jay Dobrescu, Arron Dobrescu, Staci Dobrescu, and Jynel Christ; nine grandchildren; Vivian Goods of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
