Celebration of Life
Reception
Condolences
Marie, Irene and i send our sympathy and condolences to you and the family on Fred’s passing. We were unable to make yesterday’s service as we are still out on the East coast. My days at Howard Mackie and BLG were always memorable ones when Fred and I had a full conversation - invariably about politics and the public issues of the day- Fred was was always well versed on both topics but a little stubborn -we agreed to disagree in a civil manner - and certainty i enjoyed the friendship we had over the years at the firm. I admired the collegial approach he took to office politics and young lawyers he took under his wing. A very good man who will be missed - he made his mark in a positive manner on almost all he befriended. Our sympathy -Colin MacDonald
My love and sympathy to dear Marie on the passing of Fred. He was a generous, gregarious, affectionate uncle to my children and his epic stories are repeated at our family gatherings. With much love, Jennifer O'Brian Somerville
My heartfelt condolences are with Marie and the Somerville family. I knew Fred many years ago when I worked at Howard Mackie. Fred was a good, kind, and generous man - and was respected and appreciated by both lawyers and staff at that firm. I recall that Fred was the “go-to” person if staff had a legal problem or question because he was approachable and always took the time to help! I thought the world of Fred / he truly was a Prince of a guy. My thoughts are with his dear Marie and family at this difficult time.
My Sympathy to the family of Fred. Fred worked on many NOVA HR cases with me in my role in the NOVA HR Dept. He enjoyed advising me and our company on how to deal with the assortment problems or resolving a legal claim. Fred and I were of opposite political persuasions and we truly enjoyed our sparring on political matters including Canadas new constitution but our debates turned to a good friendship and laugh.. Fred was truly one of the memorable persons in my professional career and his vast knowledge and personality will be missed. Rest in Peace.
My deepest sympathies to Marie and family. Fred will be missed.
Marie, David, Bill and Susan, Sarah and Nanci - our sincerest condolences on Fred's passing. When I was getting started in my career in IT in 1982, Fred graciously allowed me to stay with him for several weeks while interviewing for my first job in the industry. One of my distinct memories from that visit was when Fred made what he called the "7 Boy Curry". I could only handle a small amount but I remember watching in amazement as Fred's face became a progressively deeper shade of red.
As you know Uncle John had great affection for Fred - I imagine that the two of them are now reunited and engaged in boisterous political debates. We wish we could be with you all for the Celebration of Life. Much love - Graeme and Patty
I’ve known Fred on a personal level for most of my adult life through his brother Bill, who is my own brother-in-law. We have shared many family events, outings and trips together dating back to the early ‘80’s. He was a fun-loving and exceedingly generous chap who would never let money get in the way of a good time. This of course meant that he inevitably ended up paying for the rest of us back in the days when we were all on limited budgets.
There was a two-year period in the 80s when we had him all to ourselves so to speak while Bill and Sue were off in Australia. During this time I watched him lose over 100 pounds in a very concerted effort to shed some weight. Somewhere in our photo archives is a shot of him in spandex shorts on his bicycle… definitely a shot worthy of the Somerville “wall of fame “ photo gallery…
Most importantly, when Fred spoke I always made a point of listening. Large swaths of my knowledge of world history and politics have their roots in conversations I’ve had with Fred over the years. He was literally a walking encyclopedia and I never missed an opportunity to take advantage of that.
His passing is a loss to the family and to the world at large, but I consider myself a better person for having known him. Rest in peace Fred and may God bless you:)
Marie , and the Somerville family ,
My condolences to you and the family . I knew Fred was not well and I know you were as always a great comfort and support to him . He was so thrilled to have you in his life .
He was a supporter of me and of course Steve in a difficult environment. I will always remember him for that but perhaps just as well for my introduction to sushi !
May the hole in your heart mend …
