Condolences
I'm so sorry to see this obituary. I'd known John since 2002 when I got a contract job in Halifax, NS.
Got to know him and his wife, Mags, through another Scottish friend, and after that, we'd meet up weekly for a few Friday night refreshments.
After I left Halifax and returned to Vancouver, and John and Mags had eventually settled in Calgary, we then met up again five or six years ago. Since then, we would meet annually, either in Vancouver or Calgary, for a night out.
My wife and I travelled through to Calgary this August, and I'd been trying to contact John, but to no avail, then I saw this obituary, I was stunned.
What a nice, genuine guy John was. He welcomed me into his company as if he'd known me all my life. When on my own in Halifax, him and Mags would have me over at their home for supper, and he'd have one of his boys drive me back to my digs. This was very much appreciated and very typical of John (and Mags).
Being Scottish, he obviously loved his football, and we'd have some good banter back and forward about his beloved Aberdeen FC. He was also very passionate about the Scottish national team and was looking forward to hopefully seeing them in the next Euros.
I will miss our Happy Hour 'swallies', but the memories will remain.
RIP John.
