Obituary of Patricia (Pat) Evelyn Onysyk

May 16, 1950 – Edmonton, Alberta

September 16, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Pat Onysyk, long time resident of Edmonton, AB, passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB, on Friday, September 16, 2022, at the age of 72 years, with family by her side.

Patty, as she was called back then, grew up as a part of the “Baby Boomer Generation”, born May 16, 1950, in the neighborhood of Inglewood in N.W. Edmonton. She received her schooling at St. Andrew’s Elementary/Junior High and St. Joseph’s High School. Pat worked at a number of jobs, including the restaurant in Woodward’s, summers at Swift’s Meat Packing Plant, and Wawanesa Insurance. One of her proudest accomplishments was going to Grant MacEwan College to take the Library Technician Program while working part time at the Edmonton Journal. Upon graduation, Pat secured a position as a Library Technician working for the Government of Alberta.

Pat experienced several health challenges in her life including contracting Shingles in 1988 at the age of 38. Encephalitis followed, as a result of the shingles, ending her working career. Pat soldiered on in life, living independently at first, then moving into Group Homes where there were people to assist her as needed. She then moved into an assisted living facility, and it was from there that she accepted the invitation from her brother, Dave, and family to move down to Calgary to be closer to family. Pat arrived in Calgary in August of 2016 and took up residence in the Bethany North Hill, in the same “neighborhood” as her mom, Gladys, who arrived from Edmonton a few months earlier.

Pat enjoyed the social aspect of the Bethany, especially the opportunity to wander around the large facility and make new friends on a regular basis. She would tell stories and facts about her life back in Edmonton and her now closer family in Calgary, her “Baby Brother” (as she always referred to Dave), his wife, their children and spouses, and most importantly her “great nieces and nephew”.

We are grateful for the loving care and compassion Pat received at the Bethany in the 6+ years she called it home. Our gratitude goes out to the Bethany Family of Caregivers and volunteers who looked after her physical and mental health, as well as her spiritual needs.
