So very sad to hear of the passing of Al. I got to know Al and wife Hope from his days at Calgary Parking.Al was both a mentor and friend and I have nothing but good memories and had a lot of respect for him.My wife and I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
Condolences, to the family, on Uncle Ellard's passing. He was a good Man , and raised a nice Family.
Ellard and Hope both, could be depended on for some good fun, and lots of deep belly laughs.
Our thoughts are with you all, at this time.
Love Will, and the Matson Clan,
May he Rest in Peace.
Just a few interesting tidbits about your Grandpa for you youngsters.
Records he held before Guiness even paid attention to us Canucks:
Most bodies crammed into a VW wagon - AND NOT for 10 or 15 minutes!!!! Think in terms of HOURS!
Most "are you ready yet?" statements ever uttered in a single day!!! Grandma gets honorable mention for assisting with that!
Most "have I ever told you the story about?" statements uttered in a single sitting!! Closely followed by, "well I'll tell you anyway!"
As a Leaf fan:
Most disappointing consecutive seasons for a sport fan!!
Most curses ever directed at a television in 120 minutes or less - most cases being less than 10 minutes!!!
Most hours planted in front of that aforementioned television whether they won, lost or tied!! Yes, for you youngsters....there were ties back in the day!
Most "they will be better next year" statements uttered consecutively for over 55 years!! With "the draft looks good" running a close second.
The moral of the story with all of these records? He was either very loyal or misguided but he definitely persevered!!!
Having said that, I may find myself cheering for the Leafs this year. Well..... A wee bit!
All joking aside - he was a very easy person to love and we will miss him tremendously
I have many fond memories of Uncle Ellard. I used to look forward to summer vacation and we would spend time with Uncle Ellard, Aunt Hope and the kids in Campbell’s Bay and when we all got together in Portage Du Fort. You’re now with your soul mate Uncle Ellard and probably dancing up a storm. Love you. Til we meet again.
I will never forget watching Grampa play baseball with his great grand children on Father’s Day in 2022. Seeing Grampa pitch the ball to his 4 and 6 year old great grand children was so special. The kids (including Grampa) were laughing and having too much fun.
We still cannot believe Grampa has passed. We were certain he would live beyond 100, but he had a wonderful life with incredible people surrounding him. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy and stories will live on.
We miss you and love you, Grampa!
Jeff, Britt, Quinn and Jones
My thoughts and prayers are with the Dagg Family!!
My childhood memories for Ellard was his infectious belly laugh - especially if you missed a shot on net or didn't pick up a pass.
Don and I spent a lot of time playing every sport. That large back yard that was made into a hockey rink.....incredible when I think as an adult I realized how much work it was. For football Anne myself and Greg were always on his team.
Then of course there was the drive in movies in Renfrew. There was movies for us (I remember Old Yellow) but there was also the movies that we went for Hope (Elvis).
Thank you to Ellard and Hope for the great memories! I think of your family when I pass the house in Bristol and of course the grandparents place in Portage. The next time Im in Portage I will visit the grave site.
I send my love
I remember playing pick up hockey with him as a kid. Sharing meals at Frank and Anne’s house. Rest In Peace Ellard.
I remember everytime Grandpa and Grandma would stay overnight the next morning we would make oatmeal together. He would always put in his "secret ingredient" that no one knew except for Holly and I. Our father Gary would get so antsy trying to figure out what it was, but we would keep the secret between us. Eventually truth came to light that it was just a little more brown sugar, just an example of how Grandpa would always make the most mundane moments special.
