Obituary of Theodore Materi

October 19, 1938 – Macklin, Saskatchewan

September 24, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Theodore “Ted” Materi, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully at AgeCare Midnapore on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at the age of 83 years.

Ted was born October 19, 1938 in Macklin, SK. He was the twelfth child of thirteen born to Anton and Anastasia Materi.  Ted was the last remaining member of the large Materi clan. He was predeceased by his brothers Walter, Joe, Jack, Frank, Max, and Tony, and by his sisters Flora, Kay, Anne, Linda, Pauline, and Clara.

He worked for many years at Alberta Government Telephones (AGT) and Telus. However, his true passion in life was music. Ted taught himself to play guitar and accordion while attending school at St. Thomas College in North Battleford, SK. He was an outstanding accordion and guitar player. In his younger days, Ted could be found in dance halls playing music with his brother-in-law, Philip Leibel, as well as with other bands, such as the Kountry Kings.

Ted lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures: playing music, making friends, watching hockey, and spending time with his family. He always had a smile on his face and a compliment to share. He was kind and generous, volunteering his time to play music to the retirees at senior facilities to bring them cheer.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will always treasure their memories of their Uncle Ted.
