Theresia Odegnal

Obituary of Theresia Odegnal

April 20, 1933 – Ajkarendek, Hungary

October 10, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Theresia Odegnal (nee Mayer), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022, at the age of 89 years.

Theresia was born in Ajkarendek, Hungary on April 20, 1933, the second child of Anna and Joseph Mayer.  In 1945, Joseph was killed in the war and Theresia along with her mother Anna, grandmother Mary, sister Anna, and brothers Tony and Julius moved to Germany where they remained until 1949 when they immigrated to Canada. The family stayed with relatives in Beiseker for seven months and then moved to Calgary where Theresia and her sister Anna worked at the Holy Cross Hospital.

Theresia married Stephen Odegnal in 1951. Their son Frank was born in 1953 and their daughter Rita in 1956. In 1963, they moved to Langley, BC, where they remained until 1973 when they moved back to Calgary to be closer to family. Theresia was a woman of great faith, and she maintained that faith throughout her life. She was a member of the CWL at St. Gerard’s for over twenty-five years where she volunteered many hours with Inn from the Cold. She loved the time spent volunteering at the church and with her church family.

Theresia’s greatest joy was her family. She was always ready to listen and offer very wise advice. Her grandchildren Cody, Kyle, and Katie were a huge presence in her life, and she enjoyed every moment spent with them. She was thrilled when great-grandchildren Caleb, Joanna, Jordan, and Frank were added to her life. She taught us the importance of family and left us all with many memories of a life well lived.

Theresia is survived by her daughter Rita (Glen), brother Julius (Carole), grandchildren Cody (Natalie), Kyle, and Katie (Bradey); great-grandchildren, Caleb, Joanna, Jordan, and Frank; sister-in-law Adeline, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Theresia was predeceased by her son Frank, her husband Stephen, her brother Tony, her sister Anna, and great-grandchildren David and Luke.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 7:00 p.m.
