John Lawson

Obituary of John Charles Lawson

December 15, 1951 - Montreal, Quebec

October 10, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Jack (as he was known) Lawson, beloved life partner of Leslie Marion, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022, at the age of 70.

He was born in Montreal, QC, on December 15, 1951.  Jack moved to Vancouver, BC, in 1977 and to Calgary, AB, in 1985 where he and Leslie found a permanent home.

Jack was predeceased by his parents, Tommy and Aileen; his siblings Neil and Barb; and his brother-in-law Derek Deegan.

Jack graduated from Loyola University with a Bachelor of Arts (Cum Laude) degree in 1974, majoring in Political Science, History, and Economics. He returned to school in 2016 where he graduated in 2018 with a master’s in Fine Arts in Creative Non-Fiction. He was a member of Neighbour to Neighbour until 2019.

Jack accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of his ability to triangulate things and come up with an informed “opinion”, although he did admit later in life there were other kinds of opinions! Jack enjoyed reading and going to the mountains for a “weinie roast”. He travelled the world, and he shared his travels with Leslie’s mom and dad. He will be most remembered for his collection of books and the knowledge he got from them!

Besides his loving wife Leslie, Jack is survived by his sister Gail Deegan of Canmore, and his nieces and nephews Dawn (Pat) of Montreal, Kim of Prescott, Jeff (Laura) of Montreal, Chris of Victoria, Alana (Scott) of Victoria, Pat (Serita) of Springbank, and Katie (and her fiancé Allen) of Delta.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law Jack Marion (Terri) of Tsawwassen. Jack has had many friends – most notably Marlene and Joe Foley, Adriana and Wayne Boss, Nora Kirkham and Terry Gibson, Don and Donna Hall, and Don and Marlene Wilson.

Jack will be remembered always and particularly when we hear the song “My Way” because he did it his way!

In living memory of John Lawson, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Heritage, 1708 – 16th Avenue NW, Calgary, AB, T2M 0L7, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
