Obituary of Laura Joan Hamilton

Laura Joan Hamilton (nee Hunt), beloved wife of James (Jim) Hamilton, of Calgary, AB passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 following ongoing health concerns. Laura was born on November 9, 1940 on the family farm near Imperial, Saskatchewan, the daughter of James Nyle Hunt and Mary Elizabeth Lamont.

Laura went to Shyloh Country School, named Shyloh by her great-grandmother Mildred Hunt. Laura worked as Nurse Aide at Imperial Union Hospital during high school and went on to become a Registered Nurse in the fall of 1962 with her good friend Janet (Hamilton) Rumbles. Laura boarded with the Hamilton family at this time, where she first met Jim. Jim and Laura were married in Imperial in 1964 and lived in Edmonton, Weyburn, Dawson Creek, Swift Current and Houston before settling in Calgary. After having children Laura left nursing to raise her family. In 1987 she took a Registered Nurse refresher course and resumed her career. Laura enjoyed camping and travel with family and lifelong friends Ray and Donna Crockett, and Bruce and Sherry McFadzean. Laura was a voracious reader and loved playing bridge with Jim and Nancy, and many great friends. Laura enjoyed cross-stitch and needle point, generously sharing her works of art with family and friends.

Laura is survived by her daughter, Deborah (John) Abraham; son, Douglas (Tannis) Hamilton; and her four grandchildren, Sean, Stephen, Clara, and Sam. She is also survived by her sister Dorothy Kostyna; sisters-in-law, Nancy Hunt, Margaret (Jack) Smythe and Sandra Hamilton; brother-in-law, Ross Rumbles; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Laura was predeceased by her loving husband Jim, brother Jim Hunt, sister-in-law Janet Rumbles, and brother-in-law Angus Hamilton.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Mutlow officiating. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
