Condolences
David Lowe was my BIG brother.
We were both born in Westburn, a district in Cambuslang, in the county of Lanark, Scotland. Cambuslang's claim to fame was that it was the biggest Village in Britain.
Shortly after my birth, we moved to Croftfoot, a new sub-division, on south side of Glasgow, about 5 miles away, where our younger brother was born, in 1934.
Our family was active, and we three boys did the usual things of the day--school--Life-boys--Boys Brigade-Football--Cycling, Etc.
Come Sep. 1939, the last W.War broke out, and we were evacuated, but moved back home within a few weeks.
We had been used to going holidays , by car---mostly camping, but with the rationing of petrol, we took to cycling. We had 2 tandems, one for Mum and Dad, and us 3 boys took turns on tandem, and one solo
Dad's tandem had a box on the back----for Sandy, our dog. We did a couple of trips to Brechin (106 miles away,) to visit our grand parents.
Life went on, and I am sure our Mum had a tough time handling we 3- boys, with my Dad being so involved with the war effort (including the "home guard"). At times of stress, she had one name for the 3 of us------"Davidjacktom"
Come 16 Yrs of age, all 3 of us started a 5 year apprenticeship, to become Draftsmen. Now, after the war, all males had to serve 2 years, "National Service," in one of the armed forces. Normally, this would happen at age 18, but was delayed till 21, to allow completion of apprenticeship
Being the oldest, David was first, and he chose the Army, and served in Germany. Tom and I chose the RAF, and he served in Malta, and I in Singapore.
It was difficult to converse with David in the last few months, but Tom and I kept trying.
I am happy that Stuart and I saw him in Calgary, for his 91st birthday, this past May, and had a birthday lunch-----hosted by Linda, and Erin.
David had a good life.
Jack Lowe
So sorry to hear about the passing of our Uncle David may he rest in peace. Happy to have been able to share his birthday in May with my dad on our trip to Calgary, I have posted a few pictures of the day from his birthday luncheon hosted by Linda. Stuart (the little one that used to be the big one)
