Obituary of Roy Daniel Nodwell

Roy Nodwell of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at the age of 66 years.

 

Roy was born in Edmonton, on January 15, 1956; initially living in Redwater (60 km NE of Edmonton), before moving to Calgary for his elementary school years.  The family moved to Edmonton for his middle school years and then back to Calgary for high school and university.  He enjoyed the outdoors, completed a Hunter Training course, and joined the Alpine Club of Canada while still in high school.  In his teens, he had many great adventures; hiking, camping, and climbing with family or friends in the Alpine Club.  He had some summer jobs working oilfield construction, but most memorable were two summers working for the Geological Survey of Canada on Devon Island and Ellesmere Island.

 

Roy graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in Geology in 1979 and had a successful career working for Mobil Oil and Saskoil, with travel to Texas, New York, the East Coast and several western Canada wellsite’s. He was a Professional Geologist and a member of the Canadian Well Logging Society.

 

Roy was married in 1983, but later separated and divorced.  In the last half of his life, he struggled with mental illness which ended his marriage and geology career, although he did manage to live independently until 2015.  The Deer Valley Coop employed Roy for 15 years providing purpose, relationships, and many other things important to living a satisfying life.

 

Roy is survived by his mother (Maureen), brother (Bob), sister (Sheila), former wife (Myra), and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by younger sister (Claire), and father (John).

 

He will be remembered as a gentle, helpful man who enjoyed a joke and a good laugh.
