Arlene Redmond

Obituary of Arlene Redmond

June 27, 1937 – Winnipeg, Manitoba

November 25, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mavis Arlene Redmond (Saffie) a loving wife, mother, proud grandmother, auntie, and friend to many. Passing in her sleep in the early morning of Friday, November 25, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.

Arlene was raised along with her siblings, Leonard and Jeanette, at Albert Beach, MB, where her parents were Lebanese immigrants who proudly operated “Saffie’s General Store”. She attended school at Victoria Beach, MB, where many close friends remain to this day.

Arlene moved to Winnipeg, MB, in 1955 to live with her sister Jeanette, and to attend business college, which led to her meeting the love of her life, Clark (aka Cork), whom she married in 1962. Five children quickly followed between the years of 1963 and 1968. She was deeply devoted to her family, a loving wife and homemaker for many years, ensuring everyone was fed, dressed, and made it to Brownies, Scouts, hockey, ringette, soccer, dance, baton, football, and numerous other activities. In her spare time, she was immersed in a community of friendship and volunteerism in the Transcona Maple Leaf Community (aka “Mapes”), being honored with the “Key to Transcona” in 1979. After sixteen years of living in Winnipeg, MB, they moved to Calgary, AB.

Arlene’s community spirit continued with the move to Calgary, where her and Clark developed many new and lifelong friends. Whether it was helping pioneer ringette in the Willowridge Community, promoting the development of the Family Leisure Centre, or being the “Best Team Mom” for many ringette, soccer, and hockey teams, Arlene served selflessly, while also being head cheerleader for all her children’s many activities.

In retirement, Arlene and Clark found enjoyment in beach and golf life at Ma-Me-O Beach, AB, all summer where they met wonderful new friends who enriched their lives. Winters were spent escaping the cold in Palm Springs, California, USA, where they reconnected with old friends, and made new ones.

Whether Arlene was at Albert Beach, MB, Victoria Beach, MB, Transcona, MB, Willow Park, AB, Ma-Me-O Beach, AB, or Palm Springs, CA, USA, the theme never changes. Friends were made, games were played, and life was celebrated! The capacity to love and care had no bounds. The door was always open for friends and orphans who needed an ear, a cup of coffee, or a temporary home. As time passed, and Arlene slowed down, her love never wavered.

She will be greatly missed by her husband of 60 years, Clark Redmond, her children Todd Redmond (Brenda Zimmerman), Dawn Redmond, Karen Froese (Michael McKillop), Darren Redmond (Vanessa); grandchildren Alyssa Froese (Tanner), and Georgia Redmond; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Alice and Nicolas Saffie; brother Leonard Saffie, sister Jeanette Saffie; and her dear son, Garth.

We would like to thank Dr. Bensler, Rosie, Dr. Sosnowski, and the wonderful team at George Boyack Carewest, and the numerous Doctors’ and Nurses’, and staff at RVH (thanks Laura!), PLC, and SHC for their compassionate care.
