Obituary of Joan Giselle Smith

Joan Smith (nee Anderson), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2023, at the age of 66 years.

Joan was born in Calgary, AB, on December 1, 1956. She graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in Fine Arts. Joan and Ray were married in 2007 and resided first in Calgary and then in Edmonton.

Joan accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of her Aboriginal culture. Much of her professional life involved coordination between the aboriginal community and different oilfield organizations.

Joan will be most remembered for her love of family and was always there to provide comfort and support to those members who needed it. She was also passionate about dogs, especially those who needed special care.

Besides her loving husband Raymond, Joan is survived by her brother Allen Anderson, and sisters, Anne Wise, Phyllis Anderson, Ferne Jennings and Lori Ouellette Big Belly, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan was predeceased by her father and mother, Allan and Elise Anderson as well as her brothers, Chuck and Bruce, and her sisters, Gloria McCulloch and Marge Whitney.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of The Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mrs. Smith’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
