Obituary of Karen Maureen Robertson

April 4, 1971 – Chatham, Ontario

January 18, 2023 - Airdrie, Alberta

It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of Karen Maureen Robertson.

Karen was born on April 4, 1971, in Chatham, ON. Soon after, she moved with her family to Calgary, and she spent her life in Calgary and the surrounding area. Karen loved children. Growing up, she spent countless hours babysitting cousins and children in the neighbourhood. She could not wait to have her own children, and nothing brought her more joy than time spent with Jay and Emily.

A move to Redwood Meadows in the 1990s allowed Karen to realize her dream of running a home-based daycare. Working from home meant that she could be with her children full-time while they were young which was so important to her. Karen also loved animals and provided a home for all sorts of pets from dogs, cats and rabbits to iguanas and frogs.

Karen’s smile could fill a room. She was full of love and light and life. She always saw the bright side of things, even when dealing with the many challenges of a devastating illness. Karen loved the sunshine and spending time outdoors, especially childhood summers spent at the cabin at Round Lake, SK, or time spent with Larry at the campground in more recent years. Those were her “happy places”. She enjoyed life’s simple pleasures including strawberries, Christmas, the Beatles, and anything pink.

Her children will look back on happy memories of spending time with their mum doing crafts, singing, and dancing around the house, taking special trips to the Zoo and Calaway Park, and spending time outdoors in the backyard in Redwood Meadows and their many camping trips.

Karen chose to end her fight with Multiple Sclerosis on her own terms on January 18, 2023. She was predeceased by her brother Graham Robertson in 2021. Karen will be deeply missed by her cherished children Jay Flodell and Emily (Shane) Donovan, partner Larry Heath and his children Nicole (Clair) Heath, Larry (Brianna) Heath Jr., and grandchildren Berlin Ljunggren and Ayla Ljunggren, parents Murdie and Maureen Robertson, brother Stewart Robertson (Maria Barcelos) and their daughter Latisha (Loukas) Stravolopous, Larry’s mother Donna Stapley and husband Bob Stapley, Karen’s biological mother Elly Dow and siblings Ben VanBergen and Kat VanBergen and their families, and numerous aunts, uncles, relatives and friends. Karen also really enjoyed being a special great-aunt to Stewart’s grandchildren Ellee, Christos, and Sofia Stravolopous.

At Karen’s request, there will be no service. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
