Obituary of Delima Bowie Makin

MAKIN, Delima (Dee) Bowie

May 9, 1936 – Montreal, Quebec

February 28, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Delima (Dee) Makin (nee Bain) beloved wife of Harold Makin of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at the age of 86 years.

Dee was born in Montreal, QC on May 9, 1936. She and her husband of 68 years, Harold (Jay) were both raised and then married in Verdun, QC. They lived in Syracuse, New York for a short time followed by a return to Verdun to start a family in 1959. In 1975 the family moved west to Calgary. They then spent six years in Oakville, ON before returning to Calgary for good in 1996.

Dee and Jay were young sweethearts and their love remained strong throughout the years. They were deeply committed to each other and their family. Together they created strong bonds with family and friends. They loved to dance (their specialty being jitter-bug), laugh and celebrate milestones.

Dee spent the years when her children were young cheering them on in everything they did- especially sports. She encouraged and supported her children in whatever they wanted to achieve and in doing so she instilled in them confidence and a sense of wonder.

Dee loved to plan vacations especially to Florida to visit family and Mexico for beach, sun and fun. Dee loved to be surrounded by friends and family for dinners while she cooked and sipped white wine. She was funny, smart and stayed current on local and world events. And oh did she love to shop!

Besides her loving husband Jay, Dee is survived by her three children, Sherri Bell (Rick) from Victoria, BC, Scott Makin (Angie) from Cochrane, AB, and Jennifer Osborn (Grant) from Oakville, ON; seven grandchildren, Carleigh, Justine, Joel, Ryan, Emily, Elizabeth and Spencer; and five great-grandchildren, Emilia, Ellar, Eski, Enin and Amiyah, plus two more on the way.

Dee is also survived by her sister Nancy Bain from Mississauga, ON, and was predeceased by her parents William and Agnes Bain of Chateauguay, QC; and her two brothers, William Bain and James Bain.
