Obituary of Nelly Schulze

June 21, 1934 - March 9, 2023

Nelly Schulze beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at the age of 88 years.

Nelly was born in Nikolayev, Ukraine on June 21, 1934, the second child of Alexander and Alice (nee Challier) Kroguletz.  She spent her early years in Nikolayev before moving to Austria, East Germany and eventually West Germany.  In 1951, Nelly along with her mother, her older sister Anne and younger brother Wally, left for Canada, settling in Toronto, Ontario.

Nelly and family were very involved in the German Baptist Church in Toronto where she eventually met Theodor Schulze and married him on November 16th 1957.  They lived in Toronto up until he died in 2009.

They were blessed with 4 children in 5 years: Bernie, Celia, Monica and Sigi.  Nelly loved her family and the Lord Jesus.  She made sure her children had lots of good books, records, and Sunday School papers to read!  She also loved handicrafts and good Gospel Music. When the children grew up and married, she traveled to visit them as far as Calgary and even further to visit her brother in Oregon!  But she also loved it when the children came home to visit with her in Toronto.  Nelly moved west to Calgary in 2022, to be near her daughters Monica and Sigi and family.

Nelly will be greatly missed by her children, Bernie (Colleen) Schulze, Celia Fehr, Monica Schulze and Sigi (Merlin) Bartel; and her grandchildren, Lance (Sara) Bartel, Jasmine (Matt) Goerzen, Somer Bartel, Emmeline Schulze, Alicia Fehr and Becki Fehr.  A great-grandchild Ezra Bartel was blessed to have had the chance to meet her too!  She is also survived by her sister Anne Dahl and other family members in the USA, Canada, and Germany.

Nelly was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Theodor; her brother Wally Kroguletz; and a stillborn child in 1967.

Nelly’s final resting place will be in Vineland, Ontario next to her husband and near her mother’s grave as well.

In living memory of Nelly Schulze, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
