Obituary of Murray Ralph Falk

Murray Falk, beloved husband of Jane Falk (nee Trueman) of Calgary, AB passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the age of 79 years.

Murray was born in Didsbury, Alberta. He moved to Calgary with his parents when he was seven years old. He received a Bachelor of Education degree from University of Calgary and went on to teach with Calgary Board of Education for 37 years. During that time he spent two years teaching on the air force base in Zweibrucken, Germany and one year on a teaching exchange with his family in Cornwall, England. Murray rose to the position of Vice Principal in the late 1960s and then focused solely on high school Mathematics in the latter part of his career. He was a former president of the Alberta Math Council.

Murray was an exemplary scholar, a brilliant man, and a great intellectual coach to his family and close friends. He enjoyed many hobbies including fishing and fly-tying, photography, and camping. He always kept up-to-date on current events. Murray had a sharp sense of humour and thrived on witty conversation, especially while he indulged in devouring the perfect prime rib roast. Murray was a well-spoken, thoughtful, articulate man.

Following his retirement from teaching in 1995, Murray engaged in clock repair. There was never a clock in Calgary that this ingenious man could not fix; whether that meant making a gear out of brass by hand, or printing a clock dial in his home darkroom. He was so skilled in this regard that some people said he was the only person who could fix clocks over the phone.

Murray is survived by his loving wife Jane; son Geoffrey; daughter Amelia (Eric); grandchildren, Lucy and Jonathan; and siblings Trevor (Elisabeth) and Virginia Olive (Byng); and many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his father Willard in 1973 and his mother Ruby in 2011.
