George LEVENTOYANNIS

Obituary of George LEVENTOYANNIS

January 30, 1929 – Cairo, Egypt
October 9, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

George Leventoyannis of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at the age of 90 years.

George was born in Cairo, Egypt on January 30, 1929. He immigrated to Canada in 1962 along with his wife, Sophia (predeceased him in 2011) and their three children to provide a better life for his family. While he tried his hand at running a restaurant, he worked much of his career with the City of Calgary, where he started at the bottom and worked his way up to a supervisory role. He retired in 1989 and travelled until Sophia became too ill to travel. He took care of her until she died, refusing any help in her care.

He is survived by a sister in Greece, Lula Papadimitriou; and many nieces and nephews in Greece and the United States; as well as his children, Stella Leventoyannis Harvey (Dave), Anna Bassi (Franco), and Michael Leventoyannis; and three grandchildren, Paul (Yayoi), Jordan (Amanda) and Emilie (Jeremy). He was fortunate to enjoy his five great-grandchildren, Erika, Luka, Kyla, Gaspare and Kasie in his last years.

George was predeceased by his sisters Mary and Dora; and his brother, John.

We were all very lucky to grow up with family stories, multiple languages, traditions, newspapers, and debate. This along with our parents' generosity, protectiveness, and love rooted us and instilled a deep sense of pride in our culture and history.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Friday, October 25, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

We would like to thank his home care workers, David, Nanyette and Jeri, his public health nurse Lorna Swanson and his doctors Dr. Irene Hoyer, and Dr. Cindy Mason for their support.

If friends so desire, donations can be made to the Parkinson’s Association of Alberta, the Red Cross, or the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta for research into vascular dementia.
