Obituary of Jesper Naested
February 6, 1943 - Nykøbing, Sjælland, Denmark
December 1, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jesper Naested, who left us on Sunday, December 1, 2024, in Calgary, at the age of 81 years. Born in Nykøbing, Sjælland, Denmark, on February 6, 1943, Jesper lived in Denmark and then briefly in Norway before immigrating to Canada in 1968 with dreams of skiing in the Canadian Rockies. He met Irene Russell at a Grey Cup party, and they were married in 1971. Together, they built a life full of family, friends, and adventures.
Jesper was a devoted architect, passionate skier, and a fixture in the Calgary community. He designed numerous retail stores, with his recognizable work showcased across Western Canada. He was deeply involved in soccer, making lasting contributions as a coach, referee, and community builder. An avid sailor, Jesper was known for his competitive spirit and love for the water. He held a special, natural talent for the activity that was the awe of many, while always a gracious host and skipper. He was a cherished friend and family member, often sharing colorful stories of his adventures, which notably grew in stature each time they were retold.
Jesper is survived by his wife Irene, son Thomas, daughter-in-law Maureen, and grandson Seeton, with whom he proudly sailed several times on the west coast. He also leaves behind his brother Ole, sister-in-law Hanna, extended family in Denmark, and his best friend “the James.” Jesper was predeceased by his parents, Ebbe and Aase, and his brother Lars.
A celebration of Jesper's life will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at the Danish Canadian Club (727 11th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Disabled Sailing Association of Alberta (DSAAlberta.org) or a charity of your choice.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Cedars Villa for their compassionate care during Jesper’s final months.
