Obituary of Karl Josef Herzog
January 5, 1932 – Nußloch, Germany
December 3, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Karl Josef Herzog, dearly loved husband of Lucy Herzog (née Senftleber), passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, in Calgary, AB, at the age of 92. Karl's departure is deeply felt, yet we find solace in reflecting on his remarkable and fulfilling life.
Born in Nußloch, a town on the outskirts of Heidelberg in Germany on January 5, 1932, Karl immigrated to Canada with his family in 1958, settling in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, where he dedicated himself to raising and supporting his family. In 2005, Karl and Lucy moved to Calgary to be closer to their children, embracing a new chapter in their life together.
Karl was immensely proud of his work in the coke ovens at Algoma Steel, where his dedication and skill allowed him to rise through the ranks into management. He was also a great neighbour, giving his time generously to help with home construction projects and clearing driveways with his snowblower.
Throughout his life, Karl maintained a very strong connection to his family and friends in his hometown. He and Lucy returned annually to Germany where they enjoyed many celebrations and travelled extensively. They also hosted numerous family and friends at their home and cottage in Sault Ste. Marie and travelled with them on road trips across Canada and the United States.
A sports enthusiast, Karl was a loyal fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Sandhausen FC, and Bayern Munich FC. He was also fond of watching Formula 1 car racing, tennis, and curling while enjoying a glass of red wine.
Karl was predeceased by his parents, Emma Herzog (née Frank) and Philip Herzog.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Lucy, his children, Karlheinz (Cindy) Herzog, of Calgary, AB, Ingrid Doyon, of Calgary, AB, and Michael (Divona) Herzog of Calgary, AB, along with seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Karl cherished his time with his grandchildren and shared moments of joy and laughter by taking them to McDonald's, watching Free Willy repeatedly, and playing “Hämele, Hämele Stutzabock.” These and other cherished memories of simple pleasures and shared experiences will remain with his family forever.
A Celebration of Karl’s Life will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The Aviemore (48 Inverness Gate SE, Calgary, AB).
