December 5, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
Dr. Bryan Cummings, beloved husband of Margaret Cummings (nee Taylor) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the age of 79 years.
Bryan was born in Edmonton, AB, on June 24, 1945. He grew up in Alberta and British Columbia, and he has fond memories of living in Vancouver as a young person.
Bryan married Margaret Taylor in September of 1968 in Calgary, AB, moving to England that year, studying and working in England and Germany for several years.
Bryan graduated with a BA in English from the University of Calgary and completed a Master of Religious Studies from the University of Lancaster, UK. Finally, he completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Calgary in 1981.
He was a member of St. Laurence Anglican Church and volunteered with the pastoral care team, visiting patients at the Rockyview General Hospital. He enjoyed participating in liturgies and contributing to church life at his church.
Bryan worked as a family physician in Calgary for thirty years. He cared deeply for his patients and worked diligently for them. He retired from Westglen Medical Clinic in 2012.
He loved spending time camping with his wife and children, visiting with extended family in Saskatchewan and Vancouver, getting to know his Celtic roots through poetry and music, and reflecting on theological mysteries. He inherited his dad’s love of the ocean and he and Margaret spent many summers on Galiano Island. Bryan enjoyed mapping out trips around the world; with Margaret, he travelled to Europe, the Canadian Arctic, China and South Korea in his retirement.
Besides his loving wife Margaret, Bryan is survived by his two daughters and two sons-in-law, Claire Cummings and Evan Osenton of Calgary, AB, and Ruth and Mark Ramaekers of Edmonton, AB; his son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Nazanin Zadeh-Cummings of Groningen, The Netherlands; and his two grandchildren, Rose and Hazel Osenton of Calgary, AB.
Bryan is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Barry Houser of Unity, SK and his brother-in-law Donald Bennett of Vancouver, BC. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Bryan was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Rachel Cummings; and his sister Maureen Bennett.
