Obituary of Myles Flaig

April 12, 1960 – Calgary, Alberta

December 30, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that the family of Myles Flaig announces his peaceful passing at South Health Campus on Monday, December 30, 2024, at the age of 64 years.

He leaves behind his loving wife Gina, his daughter Alessia, son Declan, brother Doug (Helen), nephew Ian (Jill and son Hayden), nephew Elliot (Leanne and son Desmond), as well as Gordon's widow Candice Casey (Dan and their son Liam). He is also survived by an extended family he held very dear. Myles was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Vilma, and his brother Gordon.

Myles was born in Calgary, AB, on April 12, 1960. After graduating from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, he enjoyed a bicycling trip through Europe before starting a 25-year career with the Canadian Pacific Railway. With the railway, he spent memorable years working in Nelson and Revelstoke, BC, before returning to Calgary in 1993. In 1998, he met Gina, and they married in 1999.

Myles loved helping build his family's cabin at Panorama. He had fun skiing there for many years and cherished the fabulous memories he created with family and friends. With Gina and the kids, he loved to camp and hike. Waterton, despite the wind, was a family favourite. At home he was famous for his love of popcorn, and for making his blueberry buttermilk pancakes, or his Belgian waffles. It was in gathering around the table with family and friends that some of his fondest memories were made. In addition, he also looked forward to the trips out to Vernon to visit Gina's family; it reminded him of his family's visits to see his grandparents in Kelowna, BC, in the 1960s and '70s.

In his life, Myles was most proud of Alessia and Declan, always striving to do his part to make a better world for them and future generations. It is his kindness, wit, and self-deprecating manner we will miss most.

Myles was a lifelong learner and was a member of Toastmasters International for close to thirty years. In the past, he was an active member of the Canadian Club, The Institute of Performance and Learning (IPL), and CSSE Calgary (Health and Safety Professionals Canada).

In recent years, Myles was increasingly interested in the Indigenous Peoples of Canada and was personally focused on calls 49 and 94 in the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He was also a member of several online groups, where he enjoyed spirited conversations about being human, and the state of our world.

Our family expresses deep gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and support staff at all four of Calgary's main hospitals, as well as at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, and the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Wherever he went, Myles always received exceptional, empathetic care.

Thank you for the many expressions of sympathy our family has received since Myles' passing, and for the support received while he was ill.
