Obituary of Knud Verner Nielsen
January 16, 1931 – Froslev, Denmark
December 26, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Knud Nielsen, beloved husband of Susan Nielsen (nee Wiebe) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at the age of 93 years.
Knud was born in Froslev, Denmark, on January 16, 1931, the youngest of seven children born to Hans and Ellen Nielsen (nee Rasmussen).
Knud immigrated to Canada from Denmark in 1957, moving to Calgary, AB, in 1959. He met and married Susan Wiebe in 1967.
Knud had worked in construction for most of his career and was particularly proud of his role in helping to build landmarks around Calgary and beyond.
Knud loved photography, gardening, woodworking, and carpentry. He spent hours in the garage designing, building, and fixing things. He built an addition to the house and renovated the basement a few times. He enjoyed being outdoors on his own and camping with his family.
Besides Susan, his loving wife of 57 years, Knud is survived by their five children and their spouses, Ken Nielsen (Bunee), Nancy Whelan (Kevin), Michael Nielsen (Cheri), Dan Nielsen (Kathryn), and Sarah Vanderkooi (Adriaan); and fifteen grandchildren, Alek, Liam, Elatia, Isabelle, Emma, Ben, Joe, Caleb, Elijah, Sam, Alanna, Sylvie, Caiden, Ethan, and Aaron.
Knud is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in Denmark and Canada.
Knud was predeceased by his parents, Hans and Ellen Nielsen; and his siblings, Gerda, Karen, Emil, Niels, Else, and Inger.
Funeral Services will be held at Foothills Mennonite Church (2115 Urbana Road NW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the lower hall at the Church. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery (3219 4 St NW, Calgary, AB).
Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Nielsen’s service streamed live (see link below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
