Obituary of Janet Elizabeth Hammond

December 15, 1932 – Moncton, New Brunswick

December 27, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Janet Elizabeth Hammond (nee Henderson) on Friday, December 27, 2024, in the memory care wing of Father Lacombe Care Centre in Calgary, AB, having just turned 92.

Janet was born in Moncton, NB, to Harold Henderson and Catherine Rippey. From a young age, she was a person of deep faith and devotion to God, and she was the youngest member of the congregation at Moncton Baptist Church to ever be baptized. The family spent summers in Shediac in their cottage at Cannoncroft, and their close community there was the source of much joy and laughter and of deep friendships that continued for all of Janet's life.

She trained as a nurse in Montreal and as a student at the Royal Victoria Hospital she manned the iron lung machines during the polio outbreak there. Janet and her husband Dennis met at high school in Moncton and married after returning from university, moving then to Burlington, ON where they had two children. Every summer, their family returned to Shediac to spend time with Janet's parents at the cottage, which became a treasured part of her children's lives as well.

Janet was in loving service to others her whole life, as a daughter, as a nurse, as a wife and mother, and as a member of her church and community. Even in memory care, other residents sought out Janet for moments of conversation, compassion, and cheer.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter Susan Hammond (Peter), her son Michael Hammond (Colleen), two grandsons, Zachary (Megan) and Christopher (Katie); nieces, Elizabeth Mainprize (Tom), Joan Henderson and Ruth Henderson, Joanne Hammond, Cheryl Hutcheson (Scott); as well as numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Dennis, her parents, brother David Henderson, as well as her nieces, Janice Smale (Rick) and Janet Nadeau (Jean).

The family is deeply grateful to all of the staff in the East Neighbourhood of Father Lacombe Care Centre who made Janet's life there since 2022 so healthy and enjoyable, and especially to the staff who made Janet's last hours so gentle for both her and for the family members at her bedside.

True to Janet's desire to serve, she chose for her body to be donated to the University of Calgary Medical School for research.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
