Obituary of Brenda Lynn Cowley
May 28, 1967 – Calgary, Alberta
December 29, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Brenda Lynn Cowley, a beloved daughter, sister, lifelong companion, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the age of 57. Born on May 28, 1967, she was the cherished daughter of the late Warren Cowley and Jeanette Cowley. Brenda leaves a legacy of love, strength, and compassion that will forever inspire those who knew her.
Brenda’s lifelong companion, Dan Weber, stood by her side through every trial and triumph, offering unwavering love and support. Together, they shared countless memories, often surrounded by Brenda’s children, Melissa Melnick (Tony) and Amanda Melnick. Her ‘special guy’, Landen, whom she raised as her own, was one of the greatest joys of her life, as well as her grandchildren, Brody, Katie, and Adyson. Her pride in her children and grandchildren was boundless. She celebrated their passions and accomplishments with joy and encouragement. Brenda’s mother, Jeanette, was a constant pillar of strength and love. She stood by her side, always advocating for her daughter, offering unwavering support, and being a steady, loving presence.
Brenda is also survived by her sisters Shelley Kirkvold (Terry), and Leanne Cowley, and her brothers Dwayne Cowley (Karen) and Brent Cowley, along with many extended family members who held her dear.
Brenda’s early aspiration to become an EMT reflected her lifelong commitment to caring for others. Though her health challenges prevented her from pursuing that career, she spent her life advocating for those in need, particularly when they lacked a voice. Through kind words, thoughtful gestures, and simply being a steady presence, Brenda made a profound impact on those around her, showing compassion to everyone she encountered. Her empathetic nature left an indelible mark on the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.
Despite being diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease over 25 years ago, Brenda faced each challenge with unyielding grace and strength. Her health deteriorated over time, and the list of surgeries and procedures she endured grew long. Yet, through it all, Brenda never lost her remarkable ability to care for others. Her family and friends admired her resilience and found comfort in her presence, even during the most difficult times.
Brenda's family also expresses their deepest gratitude to the Tom Baker Special Medicine Unit 37, the many doctors, specialists, nurses, healthcare assistants, and dialysis unit staff who cared for Brenda throughout her illness. Brenda called all of you her rock stars. Your dedication and kindness made a lasting difference in her life. We especially appreciate those who brightened her days, those who made her laugh, sang to her, brought her meals, cleaned her room, and shared messages of love and hope. Brenda loved hearing the stories of others and felt deeply connected to those who cared for her, always taking the time to listen and learn about their lives.
Brenda loved the outdoors, with the mountains holding a special place in her heart. One of her favourite spots was Rafter Six Ranch in the Kananaskis, AB. where she found peace and joy surrounded by nature. Camping with her family, and her passions for cooking, painting, and crafting, brought her great happiness. She poured love and creativity into everything she did, often sharing these passions with those she loved.
Her family will always remember Brenda as one of the most compassionate and selfless people they knew. She had an extraordinary ability to empathize with others, making them feel understood and cared for. The countless stories shared by friends and family, and the many who came to say their final goodbyes, are a testament to the profound impact Brenda had on the world. She leaves a legacy of kindness and love that will never be forgotten. Brenda was incredibly proud of her family and the people they had become. Her heart swelled with joy knowing that her children and grandchildren were carrying on the values she held dear, compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to those around them. Her family, who she loved so deeply, will forever honour her memory.
Brenda's light may have left this world, but her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of her loved ones, in the stories shared, and in the countless lives she touched. She will be missed beyond measure, but her love, strength, and compassion will forever remain with us.
