Obituary of Marilyn Catherine Schuhknecht
April 10, 1944 – Drumheller, Alberta
December 29, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Marilyn Schuhknecht (nee Veasey) of Calgary, AB, passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the age of 80 years. Her passing was an unexpected turn of events, and she will be sorely missed by both family and friends across Canada.
She was born in Drumheller, AB, and the family moved to various towns and cities in the province including Blackie and Edmonton, until she moved to BC. Her father had worked for many years on the railway, and then he bought a dairy farm in Abbotsford, BC. The family later settled in Maple Ridge, where her father worked for the city in roadwork, and her mother worked at the Essondale psychiatric institution pharmacy.
Marilyn worked at the Maple Ridge Twin Maples Farm for Women, the first minimum-security facility for adult female offenders. She was also a probation officer in Port Coquitlam, and later a social worker in Maple Ridge. She then worked with an outreach organization for seniors, until she transferred to Calgary in the same line of work.
Marilyn moved to Calgary in the late 1960s where Pegi and David were born. They moved to Edmonton, then back to Maple Ridge, BC. Through mutual friends on a blind date, she met Ron Schuhknecht in the early 1990s and they married shortly after. Marilyn and Ron settled in NW Calgary, with Ron’s passing in early 2023, she had recently decided to move back to BC, to her dream location of Chilliwack.
Known for her kindness, taking in friends and relatives, Marilyn was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as a devoted pet owner. Her presence was always felt, as she had an undeniable aura that commanded attention. Heaven has gained a truly remarkable and compassionate lady.
Marilyn is survived by her daughter Pegi (Don), son David (Dana); grandchildren, Michael (Jordy), Cody, and Dereck; great-grandchildren, Brooke, Scottie, and Bronson; her uncle John (Maureen), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Marilyn was predeceased by her husband Ron Schuhknecht, her sister Edna, her brother Fred, her mother Margaret, and her father Art.
