Obituary of Ritchie Baker (nee Schmidt)
December 8, 1921 – Odessa, Saskatchewan
January 4, 2025 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Richarda “Ritchie” Baker, on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at the age of 103, with her family by her side.
Ritchie was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Francis Schmidt; her first husband, Nicholas, her second husband, Charlie, and her brothers, Carl, Joe, John, Lou, Harvey, and Bob.
She is survived by her son, Jack, daughters, Dianne and Cheryl; and her sister, Eileen. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Christal, Kelly, Danielle, Tara, Adam, Susan, Paula, and Tiffany; 23 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ritchie dedicated over 30 years to Sears Regina and was cherished by her friends. She was the heart of her family, known for hosting lively family parties and spending cherished moments dancing and sharing joy with loved ones. Her love of music was infectious—Don Messer and Ned Landry tunes always had her tapping her toes and moving to the rhythm, even waving her arms to dance in later years.
Ritchie also had a deep love for animals, especially her daughter Cheryl’s little Maltese, Sophie, who spent countless hours perched on her lap, bringing her comfort and companionship during her time when she was in a wheelchair.
Her beauty, warmth, and strength touched everyone she met. Ritchie’s legacy of love and joy will remain in our hearts forever.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m.
Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Ritchie’s service streamed live through Zoom (see link below) on the day of the service.
An Interment Service will be held in Regina, SK, where she will join her husband, Charlie Baker.
Mom, you will be deeply missed and remain in our hearts forever.
