Obituary of Surjit Kaur Raeewal

December 15, 1936 – Sakroudi, India

January 4, 2025 – Calgary, Alberta

With great sadness, the Raeewal family announces the passing of the strong, brave, and joyful Sardarni Surjit Kaur Raeewal at the age of 88 years.

Throughout her life, she dutifully held various roles in her family’s life, including Wife, Mother, Badi Ma, Nani, Sister, Masi, Mami, Bhua, Chachi, and Tayi. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 4, 2025, with her loving family by her side.

Surjit was born on December 15, 1936, to Sardar Chanda Singh and Sardarni Ind Kaur Grewal in Narayangarh, Punjab, India. She spent her childhood in her Pind Sakroudi alongside her beloved five siblings; Sardarni Saroop (Sardar Gurbachan), Sardar Jugmal, Sardar Ninder (Sardarni Karnail), Sardar Gurminder (Sardarni Harpal), and Sardarni Pinder (Sardar Harnek).

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 48 years, Gurdev Singh Raeewal. Married in February of 1961, Gurdev and Sujit built a beautiful life together and were proud parents to Harpreet (Kuldeep), Baljit (Kulvir), and Manpreet (Jasdev). Her memory lives on with her seven grandchildren whom she loved immensely; Milan, Roman, Renu, Narpinder, Amritpal, Poonamdeep, and Parminder.

Surjit immigrated to Canada in December of 1974 with her two young boys to join her husband. She uprooted her life to a new country to provide her family with better opportunities. She worked tirelessly during her initial years in Canada to create a loving home and safe environment for her young family and welcomed a daughter in Canada.

Her greatest legacy will be her strong family values, fierce independence, love, and commitment to her children, family, and friends. Despite enduring health issues in the last few years, as a woman of faith, Surjit was a fighter until the very end. She remained joyful, defiant, and was in the highest of spirits to the very end. Her last “I love you” will continue to echo in our ears.

Moving forward without her in our lives will be difficult, but as a family, we are committed to making her proud and continuing to build on her legacy. Surjit is deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
