Obituary of Annelies Sophie Blauhut

April 23, 1933 - Bremen-Habenhausen, Germany

January 4, 2025 - Calgary, Alberta

Annelies Sophie Blauhut (nee Cantrup) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at the age of 91 years.

She was born in Bremen-Habenhausen, Germany, on April 23, 1933, where she spent her childhood. She immigrated to England on January 9, 1952.

Annelies obtained her Nursing and Midwifery qualifications between 1957 and 1959 in London. On June 19, 1959, she immigrated to Canada on the ship, “Empress of England”, landing in Montreal. She worked for a year at Ottawa Civic Hospital, before moving to Calgary, AB, in 1960. There, she was introduced to a fellow German, Kurt, and they were married in 1960, and had two daughters. Their first daughter Sue was born in 1961.

In 1965, the family went to California to explore the possibility of moving there. When this proved fruitless, they returned to Canada and settled back in Calgary. Their second daughter Janet was born in 1968.

Kurt had a thriving stone masonry business, where Annelies looked after the administrative tasks for the company. In 1974, they built a vacation property, “the cabin”, at Windermere Lake in BC, where the family enjoyed most of their recreation time with friends, including skiing during the winters and water skiing in the summer months.

In 1986, Annelies and Kurt moved to Balfour, BC, where they built a house on the west arm of Kootenay Lake, and enjoyed an idyllic lifestyle in the beautiful surroundings.

Annelies became involved in local activities, including the Carpet Bowling Club, the local church, and being the treasurer for the Seniors Club.

She enjoyed baking and cooking; nobody could ever complain about leaving her house hungry! She also enjoyed sewing, making a variety of clothes for her family. They moved back to Calgary in 2018, where she adopted her middle name Sophie.

Annelies is survived by her daughters, Sue (Chris) Dabrowski and Janet (John) Schellenberg; and her grandchildren, Claire and John Wittnebel. She is also survived by her brother Rolf Cantrup and his children, Petra, Heike, and Robert.

She was predeceased by her husband Kurt, her father Wilhem, her mother Anna-Rosalie (Pohl), and her brother Fritz.
