Obituary of Florence Irene EDGE

EDGE, Florence Irene (nee Greer) August 10, 1918 – Calgary, AB February 26, 2014 – Calgary, AB It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Edge on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at the age of 95 years. Irene was the second daughter born to Eliza (Lila) and George Greer, she was born at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary Alberta. Irene grew up in Calgary and attended Central School and Central High School in Calgary. Finishing High School at sixteen years old, she took a business course for one year and followed it with a year at normal school. Irene was captain of the Junior High School Basketball team, and also played on the normal school basketball team. Irene was to do her practicum at the Brushy Ridge School, south of Cochrane. It was here that she met her future husband David Edge on April 5, 1937. Irene was nineteen and David was twenty five years old. Irene taught at the newly built Brushy Ridge School from September 1937 to June 1940. David and Irene were married on Tuesday, February 23, 1940 at the Central United Church in Calgary, and moved into their new home south of Cochrane. Irene lived in her home for seventy four years. Irene was from an old time pioneer family, Greer – 1882, Emmett -1908, and married into an old time family, Ellis -1886 and Edge – 1887. Irene worked and helped David in the ranching business south of Cochrane and in the Bassano area. Irene did substitute teaching over the years in Cochrane, Springbank and Beaupre. David and Irene were members of the Southern Alberta Pioneers and Their Descendents’ for many years. Irene was their Pioneer Daughter in 1970 and Honoured Pioneer Lady in 1993. David and Irene enjoyed curling at the rinks in Cochrane and belonged to the Western Stock Growers. They went on many tours to Mexico, Georgia, Florida and the Bahamas. During this traveling time they also went to Alaska, Hawaii, California and the Maritimes. Irene later travelled to Russia, the Balkans, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Italy, and Greece and into the Black Sea area and Istanbul. Irene was the oldest living member of the Cochrane Chapter of the Easter Star, this being the 67th year as a member and was the Worthy Matron in 1954. Irene was a great Calgary Stampeders and Flames fan. She also enjoyed golfing and playing bridge with her friends. Irene was a gracious hostess and had many friends and family who would stay at her home. She was always noted for her special smile and great sharp mind. Many thought of her as a special lady. Irene is survived and dearly missed by her children; Dr. Brian Edge (Pauline) and Beryl Sibbald ( John); her grandchildren , Cheryl (Paul) Nixdorff, Jay ( Kari ) Sibbald, Laurie ( Peter) Hughes and Linda( Rob) Berner; great-grandchildren, Brady and Elise Nixdorff, Billy and Cole Hughes, Madison, Kylie and Kalsie Sibbald , and McCoy and Cooper Berner. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, David Edge, who passed away April 5, 1988, exactly 51 years to the date that they first met. She is also predeceased by her parents Lila and George Greer; her sister Lila Edge; and all the sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law of the Edge family; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the last of the Edge’s of that generation. Mum, your family and friends will miss you now, always, and forever.
