Obituary of Douglas Ward SAUNDERS

June 17, 1949 – February 18, 2014 Douglas Saunders, beloved husband of Lylian Klimek of Calgary passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the age of 64. Doug had a full and active life before he passed away much too soon. He had a 30 year career in the telecommunications industry after graduating from SAIT with an electronics degree. Prior to the decision to develop his amazing abilities in the area of electronics and sound he was enrolled in the political science program at the University of Calgary for a year. Also, prior to his long career at Telus, Doug was actively involved in the sound industry. He was instrumental in developing Blue Heron, the first recording studio in Calgary and gained accreditation as a sound engineer. He was a member of the Audio Engineering Society for many years. Although offered various positions in the recording industry in Canada and the USA, he opted to stay in Calgary and avoid the nomadic life of the music industry. He was active in the music industry closer to home working as a sound man and also stage manager for several major arena concerts and music venues. Music was a life long passion. Doug was also involved in several political campaigns for an admired politician. After retirement in 2001 he became involved in the local community and served on the board of the Bankview Community Association and also served as president for two years. He was a serious hiker in his earlier life. He was an avid long distance cyclist doing long cycle tours in the USA, Europe and Canada. Doug was much admired by his wife, his family, and friends for his knowledge , enthusiasm, and accomplishments in his chosen fields. Doug loved his family and friends. He was there for all of us always willing to help when any of us needed it. He was much loved and admired for his strong sense of social justice and desire to contribute to the community. Doug was a good man whose life ended much too early. His passing is a huge loss and he will be greatly missed by his loving and admiring wife Lylian Klimek, his father Bruce Saunders, his sister Victoria Steele, his brother Keith Saunders and sister-in-law Nancy Saunders, his nephews Ryan Steele and Joshua Saunders and his nieces Kelly Steele, Lindsey Deimuth, and Rachael Broomfield. Doug was predeceased by his mother Bernice Saunders. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
