Repatriation/Flying With Cremated Remains To Germany

- Cremation Certificate from Crematorium
- Burial Permit
- Official Death Certificate
- If available, valid, or last issued original passport of the deceased person, otherwise certified copy
- Fees to be paid by money order or bank draft (personal or company cheques cannot be accepted; credit card or cash only if credit card holder applies for permit in person)
- Transit Permit issued by Consulate
- No translation required
- Private citizens may not fly with the urn to Germany. It either must be mailed directly to a receiving funeral home or flown on its own for the funeral home to receive at the airport
Germany has very strict laws on how to handle human/cremated remains. As a rule, all coffins and urns must be buried in licensed graveyards. Private citizens are not allowed to have urns in their possession. Therefore, all transport in Germany must be handled by licensed funeral homes.
Repatriation Of Human Remains To Germany
Containers required:
- Hermetically sealed metal liner (either with a glass window or all metal top) inside a family chosen casket or temporary wooden shipping container.
Documentation required:
- Official Death Certificate
- Burial Permit
- Photocopy of the Medical Certificate of Death (listing cause of death)
- Letter from Public Health Office indicating no communicable disease
- Letter of Embalming from Funeral Home & Declaration of Contents
- Coroners’ out of Province Certificate
- Information on the airline, flight no. and itinerary are entered into the corpse transport permit and therefore have to be given in detail (meaning flights need to be confirmed before Consulate transport permit is issued)
- If available, burial confirmation issued by the funeral home/cemetery/city in Germany
- Fees to be paid by money order or bank draft (personal or company cheques cannot be accepted; credit card or cash only if credit card holder applies for permit in person)
- No translation required
