Obituary of Sr. Marilyn Matz, FCJ

 


March 18, 1933 - October 17, 2022

 

Sister Marilyn Matz, a Faithful Companion of Jesus, she passed peacefully on Monday, October 17, 2022. Sr. Marilyn Matz entered the Sisters Faithful Companions of Jesus on February 2, 1951 and professed her vows on August 15, 1953.

 

Sr. Marilyn is survived by her nephew, Randy and family, her nephew-in-law Lyle, the husband of her niece Kim, who recently predeceased her and their family, as well as her FCJ Sisters.

 

Sr. Marilyn was born in the small town of Empress, AB, to Boleslaus and Gertrude and attended St. Mary’s Girls’ High School. She studied at the University of Toronto and achieved a BA. In England, she spent a year at the FCJ Motherhouse in Broadstairs, Kent. She did her teacher training in Sedgley Park College, Manchester, England. Sr. Marilyn obtained her B.Ed. at the U of A and taught in Edmonton from 1960-’66, and in Midnapore from 1966-’68, before being called to community leadership.

 

She served in Toronto for four years before becoming Regional Superior for the FCJ Sisters in Canada. She and her Council searched for a way to respond to the needs of the Church in the North. She missioned people to New Hazelton, BC in 1986 and once she completed her term as Provincial Superior, she served in the Qikiqtaaluk Region for the town of Igloolik, NWT which became Nunavut during her years there. Sr. Marilyn spent a year in Toronto and in 2002 was missioned to Edmonton, AB where she appreciated working with imprisoned women, co-coordinating companions in the mission of Alberta and serving on the board of directors for the FCJ Christian Life Centre in Calgary.

 

Over many years, Marilyn was an active part of various committees for the FCJ Sisters worldwide. She lived in Calgary from September 2015 and spent her final years in care at Fr. Lacombe Nursing Home and Providence Care Centre.

 

The FCJ Sisters would like to express their deep gratitude to the nurses at Sacred Heart Convent and to the nurses, caregivers and medical staff at Providence Care Centre.
