Obituary of Rick Anthony Hagel

August 30, 1981 – Calgary, Alberta

October 23, 2022 – Didsbury, Alberta

Rick Hagel beloved husband of Kathryn, and Dad to Paytin, of Beiseker, AB, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at the age of 41 years, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Rick was born in Calgary and raised on the family farm near Beiseker. Rick carried on the family tradition of farming and ranching after his dad, Roy, passed away. He was involved at a young age in 4H and continued his love and passion for leading others in the cattle industry. This is where he met the love of his life, Kathryn. In his younger years, Rick was very active in the community, playing hockey and baseball, and refereeing hockey games. He continued his passion of being a leader in the community throughout his life, always ready to lend a helping hand. Rick started roping at a young age and attended many brandings, ranch rodeos, team ropings, and was an accomplished horseman. Rick loved hunting and looked forward to the season starting every fall. He was a gifted welder, always helping neighbours with their fixes. One of Rick’s proudest moments was this past spring; watching his daughter Paytin win Grand Champion at 4H on Parade with her home-grown steer.

Family and friends were very important to Rick, and he thoroughly enjoyed the numerous gatherings throughout the year. He was a loving and caring man that will be deeply missed.

Besides his loving wife Kathryn, Rick is survived by his daughter Paytin. Rick is also survived by his parents, Rosalyn and Leo Rosenthal of Priddis, AB; sisters, Patrice Beasley of Duchess, AB, Shannon Hagel (Daryl Armstrong) of Calgary, AB, and Tanya Hagel (Chance Wohlers) of Cochrane, AB; father-in-law Ian Maslin, and sister-in-law Liz Maslin, both of New Zealand; step-sister Nicole Cezar (Chris) of Seattle, WA, step-brother Kevin Rosenthal (Chantel) of Edmonton, AB, step-sister Lyndsay Rosenthal of Ottawa, ON, as well as his nephews, Rylan, Mason, Nathan, Gabe, Logan, and Zach; and grandfather Bert Saunders, as well as extended family and friends.
