Obituary of Roy Meyrick Price JONES

April 17, 1920 – January 10, 2012 Roy Meyrick Price Jones of DeWinton, passed away in Calgary on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Roy was born in Prince George, BC and was raised in Calgary. He graduated from the Montana School of Mines with a B.Sc and M.Sc. in Geological Engineering in 1941. During WW II, he served in the Army in the Engineering and Intelligence Corps and rose to the rank of Captain. After the war, he went to the University of Toronto where he completed all his studies in 1948 towards a Ph.D in Geology. He married Olga, his only true love of over sixty-two years, in 1949. In 1956, he moved his family from Calgary to a 480 acre farm near DeWinton where he remained for most of his remaining life, except for a five year work assignment in Brazil which brought many pleasant memories for him and his family. While managing the dairy farm with Olga, he worked for a variety of companies in the oil patch. He retired in 1980 to enjoy and work on the farm. Roy spent most of his leisure time enjoying the outdoors and the land surrounding the farm through activities like gardening, horseback riding, family picnics and walks through the woods. He loved to read and keep well informed and could carry on an intelligent lively debate or conversation with anyone on almost any subject. He loved all animals, but he was especially fond of the many dogs he had through the years. His fight against Alzheimer’s was long and courageous, and brought out the best in his character, especially his sense of humor, his feelings and his singing abilities. Roy was a soft-spoken man, living his life with humility, integrity, a great sense of fairness and wisdom, and he unselfishly dedicated himself to providing a better life for his wife and family. He will be greatly missed and remembered by his beloved and cherished wife Olga; his children, Hal (Dawn), Lynn (Gene) and John; his nine grandchildren; his five great-grandchildren; and many other friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his sister Margery Glasier. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
