Obituary of Daunine KEMP

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our favourite aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt (or “ant” as she liked to be called) Winnifred Daunine Kemp, on January 5, 2012. Daunine is survived by her nieces Anne Ferguson of Calgary, Shirley (Hal) Sparrow of Dunmore; nephew Don (Lynne) of St. Albert; and niece-in-law Wilma. She also leaves numerous great-nieces and nephews, as well as many great-great-nieces and nephews. Also left to miss her and mourn her is her beloved pooch, Kim. Daunine will be greatly missed by close friends Terrie Markoskie, Diana Walker and Brian and Eileen Easton. She was predeceased by her siblings, Bill Kemp, Gertrude McInnis, Beth Ferguson, and Lester Kemp. She was also predeceased by her nephews, Don Kemp, Glenn Ferguson and Wayne Ferguson. Also predeceasing her were her longtime companions Dorothy Burton, Jean Weight and John Aldridge; her ‘adopted’ family. Daunine was born in Calgary in May 1927. She spent some time in Medicine Hat and Trail as a child, but returned to Calgary in the 1940’s. In the mid-50’s she met Jean, Dorothy and John and they all got along well enough to purchase some land together on the 1A Highway near Nagway. They enjoyed their life on the ranch with their horses, dogs, and cats. They travelled extensively and had many fun times together, entertaining or just sitting looking across the Cochrane valley to the mountains. Daunine led a very full and happy life. She had great family relationships, great friends, great jobs and saw much of the world. She skied and rode horses and sewed. She was a voracious reader, often reading three or four books at the same time. She loved entertaining and was the ‘chief cook and bottle washer’ at the “ranch”. Please remember her for her wicked, (& sometimes warped) sense of humour and her love of pretty shoes and jewellery….it’s a shame she couldn’t take those stunning red pumps with her! She was a great animal lover and happily gave her support to the Cochrane and Area Humane Society as well as numerous other animal charities. Although her last few years became increasingly challenging, she did not lose her sense of humour and still enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her home, right up to the end. A special thank-you to care-givers Bev, Carol and Mary who made Daunine’s last few months so wonderful and comfortable. Anne would especially like to thank Bev for all the previous help she had given to Jean, John and Daunine in the past few years, making life easier for all involved. Many thanks to the palliative team from Cochrane Home Care as well. As per Daunine’s wishes, there will be no funeral, however, there will be a celebration of her life sometime in late spring; the date will be announced later.
