Obituary of Daurel SUTHERLAND
Daurel Sutherland was born in Edmonton to parents, Frank and Marion Mills. She attended University High School with her older sister, Elsie Muriel, and graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1951. At U of A, she was president of the Pi Beta Phi Womens’ Fraternity and maintained many of these friendships for life. Daurel married Bob Sutherland in 1953 and supported and cherished their relationship until Bob’s death in 2008. They had three children, Jim, Francis and Patti.
Daurel’s life had tremendous range: she was a Royal Glenora Club figure skating champion and, at different stages of her life, was active in backcountry skiing and hiking, as well as swimming, sailing and golf. She knew how to love and maintain friendships of which she had many. She enjoyed her dear “Bridge Club”, as well as Bible Study, Altar Guild, Medical Ladies, the Earl Grey Golf Club “nine holers” and Edmonton friends from her youth. She tirelessly supported her children through her lifetime with unconditional love. Her life was anchored by her devotion to her husband Bob. Through long years of ophthalmology training, business travails, medical illnesses and finally years of disability, she stuck by her man. Her interests never strayed far from what was best for Bob and her children. She enriched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.
A celebration of her life will be held at Christ Church, Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W., Calgary) on Thursday, January 12th, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Celebratory colors are welcome. If friends so desire, a donation may be made online to Osteoporosis Canada at www.osteoporosis.ca. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
