Obituary of Thelma Ellen WIENS

June 19, 1920 – December 16, 2011 Thelma Ellen Wiens passed away peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2011 at the age of 91 years. Thelma was a devoted wife, mother, sister and friend. She was born and grew up in Codette, Saskatchewan, where her family, including sisters Lillian and Joyce and brother Melville, farmed. In 1940, she married George, her partner until his passing in her care in 2004. During the war years, while George was overseas, Thelma worked at a hospital in Brantford, Ontario and subsequently in businesses in Saskatchewan. Together Thelma and George built a life in Saskatoon, Lloydminster and finally Calgary, where they raised three sons and were a constant joy and comfort to a multitude of friends and relatives. After retirement, they continued a life of service, with foreign aid sojourns in Papua New Guinea and Nicaragua. Later, more leisurely, travel was to golfing destinations around the continent, until husband George became too ill to continue travelling. Thelma will be remembered, and her passing mourned, by her sons and daughters-in-law Bob and Carol of Vancouver, Doug and Marilyn of Edmonton, and Ken and Bev of Calgary; her grandchildren Lisa (Brian), Paul, Susan, Vlasta (Steve), Christopher, Stephen, and Jennifer; great-grandchildren Isobel, Miles, Steven, Isaac and Annabelle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma is also survived by her sister Lillian (Archie). During her final years Thelma was under the care of her constant companion and friend Eade Huisman, without whom these years would undoubtedly have been less rich for her than they were. She remained a source of joy and strength to her family right up to her final days. Memorial Services will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W.), where Thelma was an active member of the congregation for over fifty years, on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
