Obituary of Alison Rosalie MICHIELS

February 11, 1927 – December 3, 2011 Alison Rosalie beloved wife of Jean-Pierre Michiels of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at the age of 84 years. She was born on February 11, 1927 in Dartford, Kent, England. Alison grew up on the family farm, sharing many stories of her large family and life as a girl during the war years. Alison graduated from college in Occupational Therapy and after working in her field and two years teaching in Nigeria, traveled to Canada in 1957. She arrived in Vancouver, BC where she worked at the Vancouver Children’s Hospital. She met her husband Jean-Pierre in Vancouver, moving to Dallas, Texas where sons Dominic and Pierre were born. Returning to Canada, Alison and her family lived in Duncan, BC, where son Alan was born, then to Calgary, AB, and Walnut Creek, CA, eventually retiring to Vancouver and Calgary. She is fondly remembered for her love of music of all kinds, and the joy she took in participating in choirs wherever she lived, including the Calgary Festival Chorus, the Calgary Philharmonic Choir and the Vancouver Symphony Choir, among others. Alison is survived by her husband of 52 years Jean-Pierre Michiels, sons Dominic Michiels (Virginia Wong), Pierre Michiels (Lois Wellwood) and Alan Michiels; grandchildren Madison, Danielle, Graham and Peter; sisters Cecily Coetsee and Heather Hynard, sisters-in-law Diana Hynard and Jean Hynard and numerous nephews and nieces. Alison was predeceased by her parents Frederick and Louise Hynard; sisters Kathleen Smith and Margaret Cooke; brothers Gordon, Ralph, David, sister-in-law Maureen Hynard and brothers-in-law Mike Smith and Barry Coetsee. A service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Elboya Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary AB) on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 10:30 am.
