Obituary of Andre Rene Paul CHAPLAIN

December 13, 1917 – December 1, 2011 Andre Rene Paul Chaplain went home to be with God, after a long struggle with failing health, on December 1, 2011 at the age of 93 years. Born on December 13, 1917, Andre served in the French navy during WWII, worked on road and railroad construction projects in Africa, returned to France but spent some time in England learning English and immigrated to Canada in 1951. He began working for Mac Millan Bloedel as a surveyor and later a cartographer and remained there until he retired in 1982. In 1958 he married Dorothy Isabel Smythe of Great Britain and had a daughter Nicole in 1959. In the early 1950s Andre was active in a car rally club and was always enthusiastic about travel, geography and exploration, ships and railroads and global culture. He collected stamps for many years and was a member of the Calgary Philatelic Society. After his wife’s passing in 1988 he came to Calgary and became a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society. Andre won a number of awards for his endeavours in both the above organisations. Andre is survived by his daughter Nicole Chaplain-Pearman (Richard); brother Francois Chaplain; nephew Joel Fermal (Helene); niece Brigitte Roinvy (Pierre), grandnephews, Sylvain Fermal (Sophie), Yannick Fermal, Mikael Fermal (Aurore,) and Yann Fermal; and grandniece Martine Lorgeoux (Stephane). Many thanks to current and former staff at Brentwood Intercare who provided Andre’s daily care. Special thanks to Linda Miller, Sarah Nitsche, Jean Eshiet and Dr. Marie Patton for providing a compassionate support network.
