Obituary of Lorne Wilfred BUNYAN

January 27, 1926 – November 24, 2011 It is with sadness and gratitude that the family of Lorne Bunyan announces his passing on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at the age of 85 years. Lorne was born in Edmonton, AB where he spent his early childhood. His family moved to Calgary where he attended Sacred Heart School, graduating from St. Mary’s High School; Lorne joined the RCAF where during WW II he became an instructor. At the end of the war, Lorne went on to further his education at the University of Alberta, Calgary for two years. He started teaching in a small country school near Pincher Creek AB. His first permanent appointment was in the village of Beiseker, AB, where he remained until 1963. During this time, Lorne met and married Elaine Meidinger. Lorne and Elaine went on to share 61 happy years together and raised three daughters, Kathy, Maureen and Shelley. His next teaching assignment took Lorne and his family to Calgary where he was principal of St. Michael Elementary and Junior High School from 1963 – 1966. The following year they lived in Eugene, Oregon where Lorne completed his Doctorate of Education Degree. Upon returning to Calgary, Lorne became the Coordinator of Elementary Education for the Calgary Separate School District. Lorne also was elected to the Senate of the University of Calgary during this time. Lorne retired from his career in education in 1987 and this allowed Elaine and Lorne to further pursue their love of travel at home and abroad. Over the years, Lorne had been involved in a variety of activities such as: involvement in choirs, Calgary Pony Club, and the Steele Scouts Commemorative Cavalry Troop. His other favorite hobbies included: fly fishing, hiking, skiing, horseback riding, and swimming. Both Elaine and Lorne showed a great love and respect for the outdoors. Lorne is survived by his wife Elaine, three daughters, Kathy (Brian), Maureen (David), Shelley (Mike); eight grandchildren, Geoffrey and Eric, Jessica, Curtis and Greg, Sheila, Liam and Connor and other extended family. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Frances. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Community Church (800 – 85 Street S.W.) on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
