Obituary of Maria Dorotea VIOLINI

August 15, 1914 – November 22, 2011 To all who knew and loved Mom, she was a most remarkable woman. Dorothy raised nine children and looked after and fed hundreds. Many in Calgary called her Mom. She never refused anyone who needed her help, was completely unselfish, and true to her faith. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Ferdinando, her son John, her sister Lina, her brother Leno, her son-in-law Bernie Coady and many in-laws and cousins. Dorothy is the last of her generation in a very large family in Canada. Born to Maria and Luigi Fantin in Seebe, Alberta, she grew up homesteading with her family outside of Mayerthorpe. Her mother said at the age of eighteen, Dorothy could outwork three men. Her door was always open to anyone who needed a meal (and you got one even if you didn’t need one), and there was often a priest at the table. She was the cook at Camp Cadicasu for twenty years. Dorothy is survived by her children, Theresa Coady, Cecilia Kubista (Fred), Rita Violini, Leo Violini (Kae), Maria MacIsaac (Rod), Louis Violini (Glynn), Michael Violini (Gail) and Jeanette Violini (David); daughter-in-law Eleanor Violini; twenty-two grandchildren; and thirty-five great-grand children. Dorothy totally lacked pretence, loved to work hard, to cook, and always did what was right. After she left her home and neighbourhood at the age of 88, it was only her best qualities that were enhanced. Throughout 97 years her life force was one to be reckoned with, and now her spirit remains so.
