Obituary of Leonard Derald RICE
January 3, 1930 – November 21, 2011
Leonard Derald Rice beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2011 at the age of 81 years.
Len was born on January 3, 1930, the second of five children to Otis Scott and Artence Rice, in Claresholm, Alberta. He spent his childhood in Claresholm, serving in the RCAF as a junior cadet. He served two and a half years as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the islands of Samoa.
Len returned to the University of Alberta to earn a degree in Civil Engineering. He married his sweetheart, Holly Ruth Fisher, in 1953 in the Cardston Temple. They raised four daughters and one son. Len took his family to the United States, moving to many locations over twenty years. To the delight of Ruth, they returned to Canada in 1996.
Len had many adventures, and saw many parts of the world through travel and business, but there was no place more dear to him and Ruth than Waterton Lakes National Park. Len and Ruth’s happiest times were summers spent together in their cabin, surrounded by family and the beautiful mountains.
Len learned to fly and loved the freedom of flight. He enjoyed the business world, where he focused on the oil and gas industry. His last years were spent in Yuma, AZ, Waterton Lakes, and recently in Cardston, Alberta. He is loved by his family and will be missed dearly.
Len was predeceased by his beloved wife Ruth in 2009. He is survived by daughters, Cindy (Shelby) Beattie, Suzanne Ledbetter, Bobbi (Chris) Brook and Julie (Kenneth) Stoker; son Michael (Shauna) Rice; nineteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and siblings, Millard Rice, Velma Clarke and Bill (Karen) Rice.
